Think of a poster, ad, or app you’ve seen recently that clearly wasn’t made for you. How could you tell?

Part 2 | Texture Assignment (~50 min)

Same process again, thumbnail → rough → comp, this time using texture.

  1. Thumbnails (~12 min): draw 16 thumbnails, each exploring a different texture (for example, a cross-hatched basket weave, a “sandy” texture of closely-drawn dots). Look around the room for inspiration, cinder blocks, desk surfaces, ceiling tiles, and imagine how you’d recreate that texture graphically with a marker.
  2. Select (~2 min): choose your 3 strongest thumbnails.
  3. Roughs (~15 min): develop each into a rough sketch.
  4. Select (~1 min): choose your single strongest rough.
  5. Comp (~20 min): develop it into a finished comp. Pencil first, then black marker.

Wrap-Up (~6 min)

Photograph your finished comp. You now have 3 of your 4 element comps done.

If a client had specifically asked for a “calm” texture design vs. an “energetic” one, would your comp fit either request? Why or why not?

🗂 Organize: Put your guided notes, your 16 thumbnails, your 3 roughs, and your finished comp in your binder.

📤 Exit Ticket: Emoji Meter. On a scrap of paper, draw ONE face that matches how confident you feel about today’s skill: 🙁 (not yet), 😐 (getting there), or 🙂 (got it). Then explain why in at least 3 sentences (aim for 5), connecting your answer to something specific from today, not just a general feeling.

Stuck on how to start? Try: “I drew ___ because ___. Specifically, when I tried to ___, I ___. Next time I want to ___.”
