5.3 | Asset Management: Organizing & Submitting Your Raw Media
In the world of professional production, “Data Wrangling” is the critical process of moving, backing up, and organizing raw files so they don’t get lost. In this lesson, you will learn how to manage your unedited “rushes” (raw recordings) and submit them for review.
1. Organizing Your “Project Bin”
Before you upload, you must organize your local files. Professional editors never work from a cluttered “Downloads” folder. Create a folder on the studio computer named UNIT5_PODCAST_LASTNAME and organize it as follows:
- Source: Raw MP4/MOV files from the recording sessions.
- Assets: Your script (PDF), album artwork (PNG), and any B-roll or music.
2. The Cloud Workflow: Google Drive
To ensure your files are safe and accessible for the final edit, you must move them to the cloud.
- Open Google Drive: Log in to your school account.
- Upload Folder: Click New > Folder Upload and select your organized project folder.
- Monitor the Upload: Raw video files are large. Do not close your browser tab until the “Upload Complete” checkmark appears.
3. Managing Permissions (The “Golden Rule”)
A link is useless if your teacher cannot open it. You must change the sharing settings from “Restricted” to “View” or “Comment.”
- Right-click your folder in Google Drive.
- Select Share.
- Under General Access, change “Restricted” to [Your School District Name] or “Anyone with the link.”
- Ensure the role is set to Viewer.
- Click Copy Link.
4. Submitting to the LMS
Now that your cloud folder is live, you will submit the URL to our Learning Management System (Schoology/Canvas).
- Navigate: Go to the Unit 5: Asset Managment assignment page.
- Submit: Select the Link tab (or “Website URL”) in the submission box.
- Paste: Paste your Google Drive link.
- Verify: Click your own link once it is submitted to make sure it opens the folder containing your files.
