12.4 | Portfolio Build-Out & Year-End Reel
Key Terms
- Client Goals
- The outcomes a client wants a video to achieve: informing, persuading, entertaining, or building their brand. Those goals shape every creative decision on the project.
- Target Audience
- The specific group of viewers a video is made for. Understanding who they are shapes a video’s tone, pacing, and content choices.
- Demographics
- Measurable characteristics of a target audience, age, location, education, interests, used to describe and understand who a video is being made for.
An outside viewer judges your whole year of work by whatever’s actually visible on your portfolio site. Today’s about making sure that’s everything, not just whatever got uploaded first.
Direct Instruction (~10 min)
Complete the handout, three hole punch it, and keep it in your class binder.
⬇ Download Worksheet (PDF)A complete portfolio page needs three things for every project: a description (purpose and process, from 7.2’s format), the final export itself, and enough context that a stranger understands what they’re looking at without asking. A year-end reel compiles your strongest clips into one sequence, ordered deliberately (usually strongest work first and last, weaker material in the middle where it’s less memorable).
“A portfolio with five finished projects and two blank pages doesn’t read as ‘five finished projects,’ it reads as ‘unfinished.’ Every gap counts against the whole site, not just that one page.”
Scaffolded questions. Cold-call through all three:
Recall: “What three things does a complete portfolio page need for each project?”
Analysis: “Why might reel order (what plays first and last) matter more than which clips are objectively ‘the best’?”
Synthesis/Extension: “A viewer will only watch the first 15 seconds of your reel. What goes there, and why?”
Guided Practice (~23 min)
- List every major project from the year (S1-style summatives through the Short Film).
- Audit each portfolio page against the checklist: description, final export, clear context.
- Flag every gap you find.
- Partner check: audit a classmate’s site too. Would a stranger understand every project?
Looking back at the whole year, which single project best represents your growth?
Studio/Project Work Time (~30 min)
Fix every gap found in your audit, then assemble a year-end reel sequencing your strongest clips in deliberate order.
Exit Ticket / Wrap-Up (~5 min)
Save your file, then screenshot your completed audit checklist.
🗂 Organize: Put your guided notes in your binder. Save your completed portfolio audit checklist in the Documents folder of your Digital Design project folder on Google Drive.
📤 Exit Ticket: 3-2-1. On a scrap of paper, write in complete sentences, not a list of fragments: 3 sentences describing things you did or made today, 2 sentences naming techniques or tools you used and how, and 1 sentence asking a question you still have.
Stuck on how to start? Try: “Today I ___. I also ___. I used ___ to ___. I also used ___ to ___. I’m still wondering ___.”
