Unit 5 | Podcasting

Students will research, script, and produce a high-quality podcast. They will master the technical aspects of live switching and lighting while developing skills in professional research and collaborative discussion.

Driving Question How can we use live production tools and professional scripting to communicate complex topics?
Learning Goals
  • Use professional scripting and planning techniques.
  • Research and discuss an unfamiliar topic effectively.
  • Operate a live video/audio switcher in a production environment.
  • Create and execute a professional lighting design.
Project Summary Students will produce a 3-5 minute podcast segment that requires in-depth research and the use of live studio equipment.

Vocabulary

Scripting
The process of writing a detailed plan or dialogue for a broadcast, including technical cues for audio and visual transitions.
Live Switcher
A device (hardware or software) used to select between several different video or audio sources in real-time during a production.
Lighting Design
The intentional arrangement of light sources to create a specific mood, depth, and clarity for a video production.
Three-Point Lighting
A standard method of illuminating a subject using a Key Light, Fill Light, and Back Light to create dimension.
Gain
The control that adjusts the input level of an audio signal; setting this correctly prevents “clipping” or distortion.
XLR Cable
A type of electrical connector primarily found on professional audio, video, and stage lighting equipment.
Audio Mixer
A device used to combine, route, and change the dynamics of audio signals from microphones and other sources.
B-Roll
Supplemental or alternative footage intercut with the main shots to add visual interest or context to the discussion.
Cues
Signals (verbal or visual) given to talent or crew to begin a specific action, such as starting a segment or switching cameras.
Lavaliere (Lapel) Mic
A small microphone used for television, theatre, and public speaking applications to allow hands-free operation.
